Our Traditional Bar

English German

We opened, O'Donnobhains bar originally in 1994, previous to this the property was owned by two O Donovan sisters, this is where the name came from. The Property had been closed for about 25 years previous. It became an instant favourite with both locals and visitors alike.

The original building that remains as O’Donnabhains Pub is one of the founding buildings in the town created in 1775. Careful refurbishment of the building leading up to 1995 included stripping back the plaster work to revel the native stone used by the 18th century stonemasons during construction. We undertook a major expansion project in 2001, making the Bar are bigger, so as to provide our food area, and the guest rooms upstairs.

The distinctive front with stone and colour has featured on postcards and calendars all over the world, even showing up on US Visa cards. The bar itself has been used for a recent television commercial wanting to have authentic ‘Irish Bar’ scene.

Even with the major Expansion in 2000 we worked meticulously to work with the character we created in 94, to continue this feel throughout the ground floor, we have created a modern functioning building, that most people think has been there for decades. We continually add and improve, in 2008 our popular Beer garden was given an all weather, as we put in a retractable roof, so that when the sun is out the roof is in, and when the rain is upon us, the roof is out, providing an excellent space for smokers, and alfresco loving customers.

O’Donnabhain’s is at its best when the music is in full swing. What better than listening to a traditional Music session, in a pub that you could say represents what everyone conception of an Irish Pub. Our music is mostly during the season, but when we have large groups dining, such as a pre or post wedding party, corporate events. It can be a great night to remember in years to come.

While we have organised music, some of the best nights are when some drops in and ask us do you mind if we play a few tunes, sometimes the best things in life come when you are least expecting them. Nothing can beat the feeling like having a cool pint of Guinness, and you can hardly sit down you because your feet are dancing to the music, you will experience that feeling here.

O’Donnabhain’s has also a very popular media history, with it shop front being one of the most photographed fronts in Kenmare, it has also lead to the use of O’Donnabhain’s front in many Magazine publications, all over the world, some of them are below. Our first debut was in a Rover TV Car Advert in 98, in 2001, it was on Visa Card in America, and in 2008 a Tullamore Dew TV advert was shot in O’Donnabhains. We are happy that O’Donnabhain’s has been used so many times for different Advertising channels, it strengthens our commitment for the preservation and the continued strive to make O’Donnabhain’s better and better.

Myself and two kids (16 & 17) have just returned from a 10 night trip around Ireland ending with 4 nights at O'Donnabhain's. We can't speak highly enough of our stay here, the rooms were modern, bright, clean, spacious and so very comfortable after a days sight seeing. The staff were all really friendly and efficient, and even when rushed off their feet in this busy place always found time to have a nice word and ask after our day. We ate here every night as after the first meal we decided we wouldn't find better, such lovely food and reasonably priced. The bar/restaurant had a lovely atmosphere. The whole experience from breakfast to dinner to sleep was brilliant. Having never been to Kenmare before I wasn't sure what exactly we would find but the town is lovely and O'Donnobhain's is definitely the jewel in the crown, Thank you to Jer, Vanessa & their staff for making the end of our holiday so lovely. We look forward to returning some time in the future.

A mate of mine who’s been going to Ireland for years put me on to this place when I wanted to do a bit of gentle touring on my bike to explore the west-coast scenery that I’d heard so much about. He was spot on in his recommendation – just the right kind of pubby atmosphere, good nosh after a day on the road, and a comfy, quiet room at the end of it, all at good value booked with no fuss at their own web site. I’ve returned many times, and never stay anywhere else. In turn, it’s only fair that I’ve recommended it to a load of other mates, so I may as well share it here too. Looking forward to my next visit in June 09

Touring the Irish coastline, we met up with friends who were staying in Kenmare for a fortnight in a rented cottage just out of town. The folks who run those rental cottages also own this guest-house/pub/eaterie in the town so, as we were only staying a couple of nights, they put us on to this place. It was great and, though modern and well-kept, it had the feel of a more traditional pub and there was a good mix of folk coming and going, enjoying the bonhomie and hearty grub. Upstairs, you wouldn’t really be aware of the pub below, as it was nice and quiet, with plenty of space and a comfy bed in the room. Overall, a good place for a short stay if you’re on tour, and a nice shelter if you don’t have luck with the weather.

We arrived to O Donnabhains on a Friday evening for a 2 night stay and received a very warm welcome from the owners. The family room was bright and spacious. After settling in, we proceeded downstairs to have dinner. The local mussels were a delight and the brick oven pizza was a hit with the kids. Vanessa and Jer were extremely helpful when it came to giving helpful advice on sightseeing and driving routes.

We spent four nights at this B&B. Efficient, friendly, accommodating and laid back staff and owner. Rooms were newly remodeled, beds very comfortable. Cooked breakfast provided each morning. Access points to the Rings were minutes away. Located on the main drag of Henry Street, parking round back. Nice atmosphere-staff young and from all over - Australia, Lithuania etc. All the pubs in the town close at 11:30, so plan accordingly.

The staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful. I had requested a parking space for my classic car in advance and this was provided. The room was large, very tastefully decorated and comfortable. The bar area was full of atlmosphere and was a great place to spend the evening. The food was very good.We satayed in a number of places on our tour of Ireland and this was the best value and most pleasant stay.

The rooms were above a gastropub that had live music the evening we were there. The food and music was wonderful, then the room was quiet and large and comfortable. Parking was available behind the hotel, although we found street parking right in front.

My husband and I traveled to Kenmare with our 2 teenage sons this summer and had an excellent stay at the Kenmarerentals holiday homes. A friend also joined us for one night and stayed at the B & B at ODonnabhains, located right on the main street in downtown Kenmare. The outstanding location and charming room at the B &B was just perfect for our friend and the holiday home was lovely for us. Brand new and well appointed, the house was only a 5 minute walk to downtown Kenmare and I highly recommend it. Both the house and the B & B were pristine and comfortable, with new furniture and crisp linens. I am extremely picky about where I stay and I would highly recommend these units to travelers of any age. We will definitely return. By far our best stay and the most charming town in Ireland.

Sean, Ennis Co. Clare Ireland

It was an ideal location, right in the center of things ie pubs, shops and beautiful little tea rooms/coffee shops. The staff were excellent, very obliging and friendly. The food was marvelous with a wide choice of everything, from mussels to roasts. We were happy with the breakfast also, juices, cereals, yogurts, fresh fruit, follwed by a full fry up with toast and brown bread. Perfect.

Marina, Rathfarnham Ireland

My sister and I stayed here for four nights while visiting Co. Kerry. Jer and his staff were very helpful and welcoming, including email contacts while we were planning our trip and assistance in what to see in town. The B&B hotel is very centrally located in the charming town of Kenmare, and our ensuite rooms were larger than expected and very comfortable and quiet. Breakfasts were terrific and the pub was a comfortable place to relax and visit with the staff. We enjoyed music in the pub several evenings, and passed some time in the comfortable guest sitting room on one rainy afternoon . I would not hesitate to stay again! Thanks, Jer, for a great visit - you and your staff will always be a part of my pleasant memories of Kenmare.
