When we acquired the property in the early nineties, it was run down and dilapidated so we began a refurbishment project. We did however, retain the old timber and flagstone floors as they contribute to the traditional style of the bar. We also removed the outside plasterwork to reveal the craft of the 18th century stonemason who constructed the original building from native stone. It was this meticulous attention to period detail that led to O'Donnabháin's becoming a Listed Building in 2001. The addition of long-forgotten pictures throughout the premises adds to the old-world feel.

On opening in 1995, O'Donnobhain's bar became an instant favorite with both locals and visitors alike. The distinctive front with stone and colour has featured on postcards and calendars all over the world, even showing up on US Visa cards.

We became so popular with people seeking food and accommodation, that we have had to refer people to other establishments. As a result we decided to undergo a major expansion in 1999. We added over 9,000 square feet to the rear of the building over three floors. Upstairs, we now have ten new guest bedrooms, all with private bathroom, TV, phone (modem-friendly) and hair dryer.

We provide full guest facilities: reception, breakfast room and guest lounge and even a private car park at the rear of the building which is very useful for guests transferring luggage to their rooms. Our accommodation has been rated a 3 star Guesthouse by the Irish Tourist Board. The rooms are spacious and decorated in a country style with soft colours and pine furniture creating a feeling of simplicity and comfort. We have put considerable thought into the layout and finish of the building and have tried to maintain a consistent ambience throughout.

For the past three generations my family has been serving visitors to Kenmare. We have used this experience to develop a service that the holiday maker and traveller will appreciate. Although our guests always comment on having had a pleasant stay, I usually ask them for suggestions for improvement. We appreciate these suggestions no matter how small, and are constantly enhancing our service and accommodation.

To sum up, we hope to make your stay in our beautiful town a pleasant and enjoyable one.

With its brightly-coloured buildings and its stunning settings, Kenmare easily justifies its title of 'The Jewel in the Ring of Kerry'. An Historic Town with much to do and see, Kenmare is perfectly situated to explore both the Iveragh and Beara Peninsulas.

It will come as no surprise to discover that Kenmare is one of Ireland's tidiest towns, winning gold medals in the competition year after year. In fact in 2000 Kenmare was voted the Tidiest Town in Ireland.
